FAQs

Why do I need the full version of Acrobat?
The full version of Acrobat isn't necessary to begin using the resources of Project 12, but it will increase functionality and ease of use. Adobe Acrobat 5 or higher (full version) allows full customization, including the saving of customized templates. You may use any of the following formats for your custom logos: PDF, BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PCT, PNG, or TIF. The free Acrobat Reader still allows full customization, but DOES NOT allow the customized templates to be saved for later use. This will make supplying a finished template to an outside vendor (such as a printer) impossible. You may ONLY use logos saved in the PDF format.

Why can't I import my logo?
If you are using the free Acrobat Reader you will first need to save your logo into PDF format. This is the only format that can be imported into Acrobat Reader. If you have the full version and still can't import your logo you may need to change the type of files the dialog box will display by using the "show" pull-down menu. The full version can import PDF, BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PCT, PNG, and TIF formats.

My URL is too long, what do I do?
Unfortunately extremely long URLS can be problematic for the templates in Project 12. We would recommend trying to reduce the URL to the shortest possible address. Often removing things such as "http://" or "/homepage.html" will allow the URL to fit properly. Talk with your Website administrator about reducing your URL further. A shorter URL is more likely to be remembered and accessed by your patrons.

Why does the poster print on letter-sized paper when we have a printer that uses tabloid?
Adobe Acrobat will print to letter sized paper. For the poster you will need to adjust the page size in Acrobat's page setup preference. To print on letter after this you will need to swith the page setup back to the default.

How do I configure my browser to display PDF files?
Browsers can be set to display PDF files within the browser using a plugin, or the stand alone Acrobat application. The following links explain the process:

Netscape for Mac
Netscape for Windows

Printers

We strongly recommend using printers capable of producing color. There are many low-cost color printers available in the $100-200 range that will work very well.

Things to consider when choosing a printer:

Supplies. How much are the cartridges. Compare the costs for supplies, these can vary significantly.

Quality. Higher DPI (dots per inch) generally produces better results. You will find that most entry-level printers have very similiar quality specs.

Speed. How fast can it print. A faster page per minute count can save a great deal of time when producing many copies.

Cartridges. Most inkjet printers use 2 cartridges, one for color and one for black. Some separate the colors into 3 cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow), plus one for black. This can be an advantage. When printing from a 2 cartridge system you may have to replace the entire color cartridge long before all of the inks are empty just to replace the one low color. 4 cartridge systems are more expensive and there are much less to pick from. Our suggestion would be print a variety of templates to even out the color usage on a 2 cartridge system.

Poster Printing Service

To facilitate the printing of large Project 12 posters, the Prairie Area Library System has developed a Poster Printing Service. The service can print full color posters up to 44" wide for library systems, any library in the state, and nonprofit agencies. Full information about the Poster Printing Service and an online order form are available.
